Zombies are part of A desrt’s official scavenging loop, especially around the ruined world. The developer does not publish a current table of health, damage, speed, detection range, spawn locations, or drop chances. Build your strategy from the behavior visible in the server: identify the threat, protect an exit, test the held weapon, and leave before the fight can isolate you from the vehicle.
Observe before entering
Stop outside a building or ruin and scan the approach, entrances, corners, and space around the car. Watch whether a visible zombie patrols, reacts to distance, responds to another player, or remains blocked by terrain. One short observation is more useful than assuming every enemy follows an old community number.
Choose an exit lane before moving closer. It should lead toward open ground or the correctly parked vehicle, not deeper into an unknown room. Keep loose fuel, engines, and important cargo away from the likely combat path so a rushed click or physics collision cannot scatter the expedition.
Control distance and stamina
Spacing gives time to see an attack, correct a missed strike, or abandon the encounter. Do not spend the entire stamina reserve reaching the enemy. Approach at a controlled pace, preserve a burst for separation, and recover before opening another room.
Doorways and tight corners can reduce your own movement as much as the zombie’s. If several threats occupy a narrow space, pull back toward a wider area only when the route remains clear. Do not rely on a doorway as an invulnerable barrier unless the current behavior repeatedly proves it, because pathing can change.
Test the weapon safely
Community control references report left mouse for attacking with a suitable held weapon. That button can also interact with physics objects in another context, so confirm the item is equipped and the cursor is not targeting vehicle cargo. Make one deliberate attack in a lower-risk area and observe reach, recovery time, and whether contact is registered.
Avoid publishing or memorizing an exact number of hits without a current, repeatable test. Weapon state, enemy type, latency, or an update can change the result. The Weapons guide groups practical checks for melee and other reported weapons without claiming unsupported damage values.
Fight one problem at a time
Keep the nearest active threat in view and avoid backing into a second unexplored doorway. Move so the exit remains beside or behind your intended path, then attack only when there is time to recover. If another zombie enters the lane, create distance instead of finishing a risky sequence.
In multiplayer, assign roles before contact. One player can watch the approach while another searches or fights. Avoid surrounding a zombie so tightly that players block each other’s escape. Call a retreat direction using a landmark or the parked vehicle, not only “back,” which may mean different directions to each player.
Keep combat away from the vehicle
The vehicle is the expedition’s transport and storage anchor. Park facing open ground and leave the driver’s path clear. If a zombie reaches the car, decide whether entering and leaving is safer than fighting among loose parts. Do not attack across exposed fuel or an open engine bay.
Before driving away, check that every player is seated or visibly clear of the vehicle. Accelerating through a confused group can separate teammates or leave important cargo behind. Once away from immediate pressure, stop at a known landmark and inspect vehicle condition rather than continuing with an unnoticed problem.
Search after the area is stable
Do not alternate randomly between looting and fighting. Clear or avoid the immediate threat, confirm the exit again, and then search one zone at a time. Move useful finds to a collection point near the route out. This reduces repeated trips into the same room and makes the stop easier to abandon.
If a new threat appears, leave the collection point and cargo in place until the area is controlled. A replaceable item is not worth losing the driver, food reserve, or working vehicle. The Looting guide explains how to rank the items after the stop is safe.
Respond to a bad encounter
If health, stamina, visibility, or spacing worsens, disengage early. Sprint only far enough to break immediate pressure, then continue toward the known exit while watching the route. Avoid turning into an unsearched room or procedural terrain with no landmark.
When a teammate is down or separated, secure the vehicle and communicate the last known location before launching a rescue. Carrying every resource into the rescue creates a second loss. If the current server behavior appears broken—such as enemies ignoring all expected spacing—move to safety and consider a fresh server after preserving what the run still controls.
Common zombie mistakes
- Entering a ruin without identifying a route back to the car.
- Sprinting until stamina is empty before the fight begins.
- Testing an unfamiliar weapon beside fuel or loose vehicle parts.
- Assuming an old health, damage, or drop value still applies.
- Fighting several threats in a doorway that blocks player movement.
- Looting during active pressure because an item looks rare.
- Parking so the only departure requires reversing through the encounter.
- Splitting a group without naming a common retreat point.
Frequently asked questions
Where do zombies spawn?
The official experience confirms zombies among ruins, but it does not provide a fixed current spawn map. Inspect the live structure and surrounding terrain before entering.
How much health does a zombie have?
A first-party current value was not available for this check. Count observed hits only for the exact weapon and server you are testing, and expect updates to change the result.
What should I do when several zombies appear?
Use the exit lane, create spacing, and leave if threats cannot be separated safely. Protect the route and vehicle before optional loot.
