Fuel is an official requirement in the A desrt loop: repair the car, find fuel, and head into the procedural world. The useful rule is to identify the engine and container before pouring, confirm transfer into the actual receiver, and estimate range from your own vehicle and load. Do not rely on a universal gasoline, diesel, capacity, or consumption table.

Identify fuel before using it

Read the container’s displayed label and inspect the installed engine or vehicle fuel prompt. Keep gasoline-like, diesel-like, oil, and water containers physically separated. Color alone is not enough because lighting, updates, and community screenshots can mislead.

Transfer to the correct receiver

Move the vehicle to stable ground and stop all other work around the fuel area. Locate the actual tank, cap, or current interaction point. Transfer a small amount first and watch for a visible level, prompt, or response. A container placed beside the car has not necessarily fueled it.

Close or secure the receiver if the current model requires it, store the container away from wheels and controls, then attempt a start from the correct seat using R. If the car remains silent, fuel may not be the first failed condition; use the no-start checklist.

Find fuel during exploration

Community building and tips pages report fuel among supplies found in procedurally spawned structures, including fuel-themed stops and ordinary ruins. They do not support a universal guarantee for the next building. Search exterior spaces, shelves, storage areas, and rooms while keeping the exit visible.

Set a search target before entering: one clearly labeled container or enough known fuel to restore a return margin. Leave when zombies, vehicle exposure, or dwindling light makes another room a poor trade.

Build an observed range

Start with a visible fuel state and a known vehicle configuration. Drive a short route you can reverse, then compare the ending state. Record engine name, vehicle, tyres, load, terrain, and whether the route involved idling or repeated starts.

Use that observation with a safety reserve. Do not plan to consume every visible unit before turning around. The next procedural stop may be farther away or contain no compatible fuel. Recalculate after an engine, load, wheel, or driving-style change.

Carry and organize a reserve

Keep a clearly identified reserve where it cannot roll under controls, fall into wheels, or block engine access. Separate full, partial, empty, and unknown containers. In multiplayer, one person should state the shared count before departure and after each transfer.

Do not carry every container if the load becomes unstable. An empty reusable can may be valuable, but it must compete with food, tools, parts, light, and safe vehicle handling.

Respond when fuel runs low

Reduce the route before the vehicle stops. Avoid unnecessary idling, repeated start attempts, or high-risk detours. Choose among returning to a known stop, searching the nearest visible structure with a strict limit, or preserving the vehicle while a player scouts.

If the engine stops, confirm actual fuel state before assuming a mechanical failure. Then check power, applicable oil and cooling, installation, and seat context. A vehicle can have fuel and still fail another condition.

Avoid common fuel mistakes

  • Pouring by color instead of current labels.
  • Trusting one engine-fuel table despite conflicting community sources.
  • Counting nearby fuel as transferred fuel.
  • Using the entire reserve for an outbound leg with no guaranteed stop.
  • Mixing an unknown remainder with a clean container.
  • Replacing the engine and fuel type during the same test.
  • Leaving containers loose where a crash can scatter them.
